Century Motorsport works driver, Nathan Freke, competed in the Walter Hayes Trophy Meeting at Silverstone 7/8/9-11-03. The weekend was fraught with mechanical problems in testing culminating in 4 bent exhaust valves on Friday. The Century team worked late into the night to repair the head for timed practice on Saturday. Unfortunately whilst the valve problem was cured the engine remained about 25% down on power during the meeting. Nathan qualified 11th for the first heat and finished 9th on the track with the car handling inconsistently, this meant pole position in the last chance race. Sunday morning came and the track conditions were dry for the start which Nathan led off the line to produce a faultless display to win by 5 seconds from cars which were far quicker in a straight line. This put Nathan into the first semi final on grid 13 and after a race long tussle he finished 10th to gain a place in the final on grid 20. By now the rain had arrived and the track was soaked. The start threw up huge amounts of spray, but Nathan held his nerve and by the end of the first lap he had gained 4 places. 2 more places on the next lap and out come the pace flags for 2 laps, unfortunately the leader of the group in front of Nathan was not able to keep up with the leading group to capitalise on the flags. After the green flag Nathan continued his progress with some excellent overtaking manoeuvers to finish in 8th place and 2nd in class. An excellent result with an under powered engine and poor rubber.
